If you purchased your game directly from the Steam Store then you're already good to go - it will be activated immediately and the download should begin. You don't need to enter any CD keys (activation codes) as Steam automatically assigns one for you.
If you purchased outside of the Steam Store, you'll typically be given a CD key (activation code) from the retailer. Once you have this key, copy it and visit this page. Then input the code into the box and click 'Continue'. Please then follow the instructions provided by Steam and the product will be activated on your account - you'll then be able to download and play.
For more help, please read this help thread on Steam.
If you've been given an invalid product code, or think you've been scammed - please contact the retailer or contact Steam immediately providing proof of purchase - they can then help you diagnose the issue. If you're certain you've been scammed by one of our approved retailers, let us know, and we'll investigate for you.
